| Most stories about the first Thanksgiving result in a feast between the foreign pilgrims and the local native americans. The feast was to celebrate the harvest and lasted for 3 days. During the celebration, there was of course music and gifts for the children in the villages. The locals and the foreigners shared their traditions including sports such as tossing a leather ball and sliding around the ice on tiny metal rails. The feast always included prime rib brought from afar and also the food of the local people. The celebratiion usually continued with the women going off to the forest with the young ones to gather fire wood, visit santa claus, and chop down a Christmas tree while the men visited the town center to barter for imitation beads. The partygoers would at some point traveler to the main market place and watch as those who had the most to sell would give a speech and light the largest tree in the town with energy efficient candles that would save the town from feeding eight horses. In thanks, the pilgrims would take the largest barn in town and within it recreate the town of London.
The modern Thanksgiving has changed from that original celebration but one thing remains the same - it is a wonderful time to be around family. Thanks all for making the trek to San Francisco and giving Jenn and I much reason to give thanks. |
